First Grade Curriculum

Bible - Students learn about God’s creation of our world and continue with lessons that take them through the life of Jesus Christ. Bible teachings are reinforced through memory verses and developing moral character.

Language Arts - Instructors use a phonemic-based program that utilizes digraph, combinations, and dipthongs. Students learn to write sentences by forming complete thoughts and using proper punctuation and capitalization. Learning continues in ability-based reading groups. Other concepts include:

  • Journaling
  • Grammar
  • Handwriting
  • Spelling

Mathematics - Students use a basic understanding of number concepts and place value to solve addition and subtraction problems of one and two digit numbers. Additional concepts include:

  • Data and Graphing
  • Geometry and Fractions
  • Order
  • Comparing Numbers
  • Time and Money
  • Measurement

Science - Students explore God’s many creations and living things, as well as develop a foundational understanding of the Earth’s land and water masses. Other concepts include:

  • Weather and Season
  • Magnets

Social Studies - Students learn that people live and work all around the Earth. Through their study of people, they begin to understand the Earth is in a state of constant change.
