Fifth Grade CurriculumBible - Students survey the Old Testament for a clearer perspective on how the stories fit together into one big story. Old Testament representations of Jesus Christ and the application of life principles in everyday life are highlights in the curriculum Possessing the Land. Students will also examine the following concepts:
Language Arts - Students gain deeper knowledge and understanding of grammar concepts and parts of speech, along with punctuation and spelling. These concepts are taught cohesively to enhance writing and speaking skills. Students study the eight parts of speech, their complements, punctuation, and the writing process, and they are expected to apply this knowledge to daily writing. Students are held accountable for the information they have learned in grammar through their writing across the curriculum. Reading - Students read a variety of genres including biographies, non-fiction, fiction and poetry. Reading comprehension and practical reading strategies are taught through a variety of teaching methods. Group work, modeling, class discussions, guided practice through oral reading and book projects are a few ways the students are evaluated. Comprehension concepts and literary skills include:
Mathematics - Students’ appreciation for numbers is enhanced by understanding that God has given us the ability to work with order, design, sequence, quantities, and numerical relationships. Mathematical truths exist because God made them so. Concepts and skills include:
Science - Students expand their knowledge of the ways God has made Himself known to us in His Creation. The written revelation and the natural revelation are parts of the unity of all truth in God. Emphasis is placed on foundational truths in conjunction with the concepts of God’s Creation including:
Social Studies and Geography - Students grow in their knowledge and understanding of United States History by looking closely at the connections that were made between the citizens and cultures of the east and west, changes and conflicts that arose on the Plains, the rise of big business, and immigrants coming to America. Parallel to this study is a focus on map skills that enhances student ability to use the 5 themes of geography, directions, symbols and legends, scale and distance, functions of all different kinds of maps, latitude and longitude, the earth and sun, time zones, and graphs.
