Music Curriculum

Sixth Grade

This nine week course continues to build on the foundation and concepts gleaned from elementary music. Students use a varied repertoire of music to sing alone and with others, as well as to perform on instruments alone and with others. Students also compose and arrange music within specified guidelines, read and notate music, listen to, analyze, and describe music, and evaluate music and musical performances. Additional concepts include:

  • Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts
  • Understanding music in relation to history and culture
  • Moving to a varied repertoire of music

Seventh and Eighth Grade

Students apply basic music reading and writing skills as they compose and arrange music. During the nine week course, students also experience a brief historical survey of classical music, hymnology, and music in the Bible. Students’ appreciation for music and its influence on culture is enhanced by understanding the use of the following musical concepts:

  • Dynamics
  • Harmony
  • Expression
  • Style
  • Tonality
  • Tempo
