Speech Curriculum

Eighth Grade

Speech is a nine week course that provides students with a basic introduction to public speaking. Effective oral communication with an emphasis on speech preparation and presentation skills is important for students as they move into high school academia. This course offers students the opportunity to practice and enhance such skills in a safe environment. Students will prepare and deliver a variety of formal and informal speeches that include personal introduction, informative, PowerPoint-assisted, and persuasive. Attention is given to development of these fundamental skills:

• Outline preparation
• Use of attention grabbers
• Proper thesis construction
• Eye contact
• Vocal changes
• Natural body movements
• Organization of information and supporting material
• Awareness of timing
