Fall and Spring Semester

Description:  This course provides an avenue for students to worship and glorify God, while developing their voice, musicianship, creative skills and teamwork. Fundamental note reading, vocal technique,beginning musical theory concepts, and exposure to various genres of music are some of the components that make up the content of this course. Students will be given opportunities to perform at several chapels throughout the year, as well as two larger concerts during the year.

This course will be combined with a study hall two days a week

 

Title: Drama/Study Hall

Description:

This course will introduce students to the basics of theatre and performance. Students will learn and display a grasp of the elements of a working stage and the separate individuals who make it run. The course will also explore the fundamentals of performance. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with the creative expression and an artistic approach to storytelling. Students will prepare for a one act production each semester and performed at a middle school fine arts event. At least 2 days per week will serve as study hall.

 

Title: Paladin Production / Study Hall

Fall and Spring Semester

 

Grade: 7 – 8   Instructors: Becky Jackson

             

Description: In this course, students will create Paladin productions for the middle school. Students will learn about video editing and production elements to create a broadcast piece. Students will learn about and use production technology to create video segments that will be incorporated into middle school morning announcements and on information screens. These students will also be responsible for delivering the live daily morning announcements.  At least 2 days per week will serve as study hall.

Description: In this course, students will  design, publish, and distribute a middle school newspaper which will be handed out to the middle school students and faculty 2-3 times per semester. Students will be responsible for writing the columns, creating advertising, conducting interviews and doing research for articles.  At least 2 days per week will serve as study hall.

Title: Photo Journalism

Description: Students will participate in the total preparation of the school yearbook including: deciding the theme, layout and design, photography and reporting, editing, and final proofreading and approval. Students who return to yearbook and/or demonstrate an exceptional desire and skill may apply for editing positions (editor-in-chief, design editor, copy editor, and photo editor).

Title: Middle School Worship Team

Fall and Spring Semester

Grades:  7-8     Instructor:  Ryan Walter

Prerequisite:  Students must audition with Mr. Walter (ryan.walter@fcspaladins.org) and be selected to be part of this class.

Description:  The MS Worship Team course is dedicated to musical preparation for student-involved chapel worship services.  In this course, students will grow in both their faith and their musical abilities (instrumental or vocal). Students will learn how the flow of a worship service operates, aid in planning chapel events, learn their musical craft, and engage in discussion about the pursuit of godly worship.  In addition to the in-class time, students will regularly be expected to play/sing publicly for FCS MS chapel gatherings. Considering chapel planning is a leadership role on campus, this is an opportunity that is offered only to rising seventh and eighth graders and will be selected by audition only. For those interested in joining, team roles include (but are not limited to): vocalists, percussion, bass, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboard, and setup audio/video technician.
 

Title: Middle School Band

Description: Middle School Band is an ensemble, performing arts class that provides students with learning and performance opportunities on wind, brass and percussion instruments. The primary focus is on the development and expansion of basic skills necessary for effective instrumental music practice and performance. Our goal is for students to develop a love of music in both faith and practice. Students will play a wide variety of music and will be pushed to develop their skills while also strengthening their daily walk with God. Students will receive instruction on instrument rental if needed.

Title:Wilderness Survival / Study Hall

Spring Semester

Grade: 6–8    Instructor: Richard Roth                      

Description:  This course is designed to equip students with the basic knowledge necessary for surviving outdoors. They will learn eight basic skills including, building a shelter, making a fire, finding water, finding food in the wild, signaling for help, navigation, basic wilderness first aid and predicting the weather. In addition to this, they will learn how to pack and prepare for the unexpected for outdoor activities that require an overnight stay. They will also work through wilderness survival scenarios in which they will apply the information they learned. At least one day per week will serve as study hall.

Title: Boys Sports Skills Plus / Study Hall

Fall Semester

Grade: 6–8    Instructors: Richard Roth

Description: This elective course will entail 4 days a week of basic sport skills relating to our Spring Sports Programs along with a few individual type sport activities that can be participated in beyond their school years. The goal is to involve and excite them about sports and activities that they can competitively compete in and also continue to play later in their lives. The class will last for one semester and will consist of mostly 2-3 week units. Students must register for class only if they are serious about participating in the activities. At least one day per week will serve as study hall.

Activities: Archery, Baseball, Corn Hole, Frisbee Golf, Lacrosse, Soccer, Tennis, Ultimate Frisbee.

Title: Girls Life Time Sports/Study Hall

Description:  This combination course will entail 3 days a week of Lifetime Sports and 2 days a week of Study Hall.  In Lifetime Sports, students will be involved in games and activities that they can play for a lifetime.  The goal is to involve and excite them about sports and activities that they can continue to play later in their lives.  The class will last for one semester and will consist of mostly 2-3 week units.  Students must register for class only if they are serious about participating in the activities.  Classes will mostly be split between girls and boys, but some activities may be co-ed.At least two days per week will serve as study hall.

Activities: Tennis, golf, badminton, ultimate Frisbee, disc golf, bowling, track, fitness, etc.

Title:  Vex Robotics

Length: Fall semester plus additional meetings after school during spring semester until early March

Prerequisite:  The student must have participated in Vex Robotics or taken Introduction to Robotics

Course Description: This course will offer instruction to support and equip students competing for FCS on a Vex robotics team. Students will learn about the engineering design process through designing, building and programming robots for competition.  Additional time outside of the elective should be expected to prepare the robot for competitions.  The teams will participate in 4 regional competitions, a State Championship Tournament and possibly the U.S. Open National Competition.  There will be an additional team participation fee of $300 and must be paid when the elective course begins in August.  This fee includes the additional expenses of team and competition registration fees and robot parts.

 

 

Title: Introduction to Robotics

Course Description:  Students will learn about the engineering design process through designing, building and programming robots.  Students may also want to attend a Vex Robotics competition if they are interested in pursuing robotics the following year.  This course is a prerequisite for our competitive robotics program.

Description:  The purpose of study hall is to give students an opportunity during the school day to complete homework assignments, study for upcoming assessments and work on long-range assignments.  Students are expected to come to class each day prepared to use their time wisely and bring all necessary study tools with them.  Study hall will be a quiet class environment where students can work independently.  Students will benefit from having a math teacher in this class.  He/she will be available to help students with their homework and to answer questions in preparation for math tests.
