We advise most juniors to take only TWO tests in the fall: the PSAT on 10/25 and the ACT on 12/09/17.

Note: Sophomores and Juniors will take the PSAT at Fellowship on October 25th during the school day.

Students need to register for the ACT exam on the following website:

Our reasoning is two-fold:

1) We believe it’s best for juniors to concentrate on getting good grades during their first semester of junior year, which is the primary focus of college admissions staff.

2) Upon receiving and reviewing scores for these two exams, after Christmas break. These scores are a good predictor of how well they will do on their actual SAT exam. Students can then formulate a solid testing plan for the Spring when they can take 3 additional tests.

FALL 2018 Test Prep Course

Setting students up for success on the PSAT

The PSAT is NOT simply a practice test!

Why Take the PSAT?

The PSAT is the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Not only can you receive scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation based on your PSAT performance but many universities offer school-specific scholarships to National Merit Finalists.

The first step to qualify for National Merit recognition is to score well on the PSAT.

The PSAT itself is a shortened and simplified version of the SAT. Students have the opportunity to get a feel for the test’s format by taking a practice test in October of their sophomore year.

The PSAT also prepares you for the SAT.
Underestimating the significance of the PSAT is a common mistake, but is one that is easily corrected.

Why the PSAT is more important than the SAT (for scholarships)

The 2018 Fall PSAT Prep Course is an intensive series of classes offering students over 11 hours of instruction and exam practice over 3 Saturdays that will set them up for success on their PSAT exam. During this course, students will receive 8 hours of training, including LOTS of concept review, proven test-taking strategies, and of course, practice, practice, practice!  Also, during the final session, students take a PSAT mock test.

What is the PSAT?

The PSAT itself is a shortened and somewhat simplified version of the SAT. Students first have the opportunity to get a feel for the SAT exam format by taking a practice PSAT exam in October. The PSAT is the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Not only can you receive scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation from your performance on the PSAT, but many universities offer school-specific scholarships to National Merit Finalists.

Who should take this course?

This course is ideal for all freshman and also for the sophomores who are NOT planning to take their SAT or ACT exam during this school year. For the sophomores and juniors who plan to take the SAT or ACT exam this year, we highly recommend that they take the full test prep course.

Additional Test Prep Courses:

Traditionally, Mrs. Traci McGee and Mrs. Liz Ray have held SAT/ACT test prep courses 3-4 times a year.  In addition to our fall prep courses, we typically hold one SAT/ACT prep course in the winter (Saturday mornings in January/February and/or in March), and two in the summer (weekdays in June and July).  In previous years we’ve held an intensive, week-long, after-school course for juniors only in March, to prepare them for the in-house ACT exam. This PSAT prep course is typically the only PSAT prep course we hold each year. Please stay tuned to the weekly newsletters, the FCS website, and social media for information on upcoming courses.
