Washington Putting in Summer Work to Improve Golf Game; Preps for Sophomore Season at Jackson State University
Fellowship Christian School graduate Alex Washington has worked hard all summer to improve her game in advance of Jackson State University’s upcoming NCAA Division I golf season.
“My summer is going well,” Washington said. “I am here in Mississippi working on my game. I am practicing and really trying to grind it out and get ready for the season.”
Following her freshman year at the HBCU school located in Jackson, Miss., Washington has extra motivation to get more pars, birdies and even eagles this season.
“My first season was a battle,” she said. “It was a big change from high school golf. I didn’t even know I wanted to play college golf until my senior year at Fellowship. But I thought being an athlete would help me expand my college choices. I really fell in love with the grind of college golf. But the competition here at this level is very tough. These girls here and who we play against have been playing since they were 2 years old! I wanted to help my game and stay focused this summer. I am blessed to do what I do.”
As a freshman, Washington played in nine matches over the fall and spring seasons.
“I traveled to all the tournaments, and played in all the qualifiers,” she said. “I was one of three freshmen on the team. I made the No. 5 slot every tournament. I played to the best of my abilities. We are a good team. We are chasing championships.”
JSU brought back golf for the first time 2017 in 2025-26. The Lady Tigers placed fourth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
The Lady Tigers finished third overall at the 2026 National Women's Collegiate Golf Championship hosted by the Women in Golf Foundation at the Golf Club at Cisco Ranch in Katy, Texas, from March 31-April 1, 2026.
Washington, a 2025 graduate of FCS, is a criminal justice major at JSU.
“I love the size of the school, and the professors here are so kind, especially because I travel so much for golf,” Washington said. “It’s amazing to be part [of a HBCU school]. The culture is so different than Fellowship. The community here is so awesome. There’s a lot of people here, but I have met so good people.”
Washington has plenty of fond memories at Fellowship.
“Coach Morrell is so funny,” Washington said. “He’s so fun and kept us loose. He never put too much pressure on us. He taught us to give all the Glory to God. I loved playing on that team. My teammates there are some of my best friends.”
FCS fielded its first varsity golf team in 2023 and made it to the state tournament for the first time the next year. The Lady Paladins placed fourth in the 2024 GHSA Class AA Girls Golf Championship and finished 12th in the 2025 Class A-3A Private Girls Golf Championship.
Washington was part of all three of those teams. She was named Most Improved Athlete for 2021-22, was selected Team MVP from 2022-2024, earned the Team Leadership Award for 2024-25, was named Spanish II Honor Student in 2022-23 and received the John B. Stetson Award in 2023-24, all as a Fellowship student-athlete.
