Ray, Murfree Claim 50^th Place at State Fishing Meet

Three teams from Fellowship Christian School’s varsity fishing squad competed in the GHSA State Finals held at Lake Sinclair on May 9.

Sophomores Robert Ray and Sam Murfree captured 50^th place out of 111 teams at the tournament.

“It was a good Saturday for our Fellowship teams fishing at the State Final on Lake Sinclair,” head coach Curt Morrell said. “This was a great season for our young sophomore heavy team and a remarkable achievement to have multiple teams qualify for state again. Congratulations on a great season to all of our fellowship fishing teams!”

Junior Gavin Smith and sophomore Caleb Nelson placed 59^th, and senior Campbell Brown and sophomore Kellan McMichael came in 83^rd.

This year marks the sixth consecutive season that FCS team members have qualified for the state meet. Murfree and Ray finished 23rd out of 108 teams in 2025.

The top finishers in tournament history for the Paladins are Holden McClung and Robert Wade, who were ninth out of 106 teams in 2023, and Jordan Brewer and Matson Grose placed ninth out of 162 teams in 2021.

Ray and Murfree Become Third Team to Reach State Tournament

The varsity fishing squad from Fellowship Christian School will send its third pair to the GHSA State Finals held on May 9 at Lake Sinclair.

On April 11, sophomores Robert Ray and Sam Murfree qualified for the state finals during the fourth and final qualifying event held on Lake Hartwell.

“They placed fifth out of 221 teams,” head coach Curt Morrell said. “Scarlett James and Ryan Hawkins also had a great showing, placing 47^th. We are looking forward to our State Tournament at Lake Sinclair on May 9. This is the second year in-a-row that we will have three Fellowship fishing teams that compete at state.”

Junior Gavin Smith and sophomore Caleb Nelson qualified for the state tournament at the second qualifier of the season on Feb. 7 at West Point Lake. Senior Campbell Brown and sophomore Kellan McMichael advanced to the state event at the third qualifier held on Clarks Hill Lake on March 7.

Bound for State: Brown and McMichael Place 13^th at State Qualifier No. 3

The varsity fishing squad from Fellowship Christian School competed in State Fishing Qualifier No. 3 at Clarks Hill Lake on March 7.

Brown and McMichael qualified for the upcoming state tournament as they finished 13th out of 222 teams competing with 14.8 pounds.

“Alumnus Holden McClung, who now fishes for his college team, did an amazing job as their captain,” Morrell said.

Nelson and Smith placed 33^rd with 12.2 pounds, while Brannon and Rhoden placed 59^th with 10.4 pounds. Ray and Murfree also placed in top 100 at 65^th with 9.14 pounds.

Smith and Nelson qualified for the state meet during the second qualifier in February.
